From Vidarbha’s Fields to Global Classrooms

Born and raised in Vidarbha, Akash witnessed firsthand the hardships faced by farmers: poverty, broken food systems, and the grim reality of farmer suicides. Despite earning an industrial engineering degree, he felt disconnected from the corporate path and longed to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

He soon realized that agriculture and food systems in Vidarbha were broken, and if he wanted a meaningful impact, he needed to pivot entirely. This realization led him to the Institute of Development Studies (IDS, UK), the world’s top-ranked development studies institute, where he honed his understanding of global social systems while keeping his focus on local change.

Beejotsav: Promoting Sustainable Farming

Over the past 12 years, Akash has been deeply involved with Beejotsav, not for profit initiative that empowers farmers and promotes sustainable agricultural practices.

Beejotsav organizes seed festivals, where farmers exchange seeds and knowledge about indigenous farming practices. Through these initiatives, Akash has helped:

  • Promote indigenous seeds and biodiversity
  • Encourage low-input, chemical-free agriculture
  • Make farming profitable and self-reliant

His work is aimed at reducing dependency on agrochemicals while fostering a sustainable and dignified livelihood for farmers.

Life-Shaping Experiences: Jagriti Yatra & Nirman

Two key programs shaped Akash’s approach to social impact:

  • Jagriti Yatra – a 15-day train journey across India with over 500+ young entrepreneurs and changemakers, offering exposure to innovative business models and social initiatives.
  • Nirman – a youth program founded by Dr. Abhay and Dr. Rani Bang, connecting him with mentors who guided his journey in social development.

Through these experiences, Akash gained not only professional insights but also lifelong connections that continue to support his work today.

Scholarships That Set Him Apart

Akash Naoghare holds the distinction of being awarded both the Chevening Scholarship (UK) and the World Bank Scholarship, a rare achievement since recipients typically cannot hold two scholarships simultaneously.

This milestone highlights not only his academic excellence but also his unwavering commitment to making an impact.

Childhood Rebellion & the Phoenix Metaphor

Akash’s rebellious streak began in childhood. He often challenged authority and, in a humorous anecdote, even tried to “double” coins by throwing them into a well.

“His parents’ strict discipline ensured that his rebelliousness became a strength rather than a liability”.

He likens his life to a Phoenix, rising again and again despite challenges:

“Every time systems tried to bury me, I rose again.”

Multifaceted Personality

Beyond his work in sustainable agriculture, Akash has several surprising talents:

  • Writes rap songs during moments of strong emotion (his rap about “Bosso” is coming soon to Spotify)
  • Plays cricket, earning the nickname “Kohli” among peers
  • Writes columns for Marathi and English newspapers
  • Explores Nagpur’s café scene as a coffee enthusiast
Food, Travel & Secret Destinations

Akash has a simple taste for comfort food but a curious eye for travel:

  • Favorite Dish: Dal-chawal with tadka.
  • Favorite Travel: Switzerland, praised for its safety, serenity  and natural beauty
  • Secret Bucket List Destination: Kasar Devi, Uttarakhand, known for its mystical energy and spiritual ambiance
Advice for Young India

Akash’s message to the youth is clear and motivational:

  1. “Whatever you dream, it can come true if you put the right intentions and effort.”
  2. “Always ask the right questions, they will take you to places.”
A Candid View of the Development Sector

Akash also addresses the challenges in India’s development sector:

“There’s too much hypocrisy. Many people preach ethics but don’t practice them. Youngsters who join development inspired by such leaders often feel cheated. Compassion is missing, and that’s a dangerous trend.”

Conclusion

Akash Naoghare’s journey is proof that one individual’s courage can impact thousands of lives. From indigenous seeds to farmer empowerment, from international scholarships to grassroots action, his story blends resilience, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to social change.

He continues to rise, like a Phoenix, inspiring the next generation of changemakers to challenge the system, dream big, and take action.
